Sky Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Cloud Painting, "Autumn Skies" by Carol Schiff, 8x10x1.5" Oil

In this small oil painting, the rusty foliage and peachy clouds are the perfect foil to the blue sky.  It's always a happy day when a painting goes together easily as this one did.

I painted with a palette knife, which is almost always fun, to achieve the texture and subtle color changes I was looking for.

In these hectic days before the holidays, it's always nice to stop, take a deep breath, and enjoy the world around you.

Mountain Sunset Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Blue Ridge Sunset" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil SOLD

This mountain sunset painting is a result of our most recent trip to Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.  We were there for the beautiful leaf viewing season, and it was spectacular!  We came home to Florida on Halloween and missed the incredible 22" of snow that accumulated the next day.  I am sure that cut the leaf season short.

The leaves were not the only spectacular sight!  I find the mountains as fascinating as the ocean with it's constantly changing moods.

This is me, having fun!!

This month, we will be making our first winter trip to our North Carolina home....I am hoping to see that beautiful landscape covered in snow.

Here in Florida, we don't have falling leaves, or snow.  That has not stopped us from getting in the Christmas spirit.  If you have an art lover on your list, check out my Etsy shop.  I have a large selection of original paintings as well as gift certificates.

Mountain Painting | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Grandfather Mountain by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil

This mountain painting is a view of Grandfather Mountain near Boone NC.  It was a cold and windy day when I ventured out, but it was worth the effort.

The view was gorgeous!  Mountains and oceans hold the same fascination for me...they are both ever changing in color and mood and filled with energy and movement.

I have just returned from an Elio Camacho workshop and this piece is a sample of me trying to paint like him!  My goal is better color relationships.....he is a master in that area.

Just a reminder.....today and tomorrow, my paint group, Pieces of Eight, is having our annual Christmas sale at Ralph's Art Supply in Eau Gallie Arts District.  Check out the details here.

Mountain Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, "Mt Rainier" by Carol Schiff, 8x6" Oil

I wanted to do a mountain painting.....but this time it is not the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.  After a trip to Mt, Rainier in Washington state, I had to paint it!

Everything is bigger and more rugged in the west and Mt,. Rainier is the biggest of them all.  It looms over you in the Seattle/Tacoma area......a very massive and impressive sight.  I was surprised to see it poking through the clouds during our flight.

It's not just the mountains that are larger in the west.  I was also fascinated with the tall, tall trees.  It was a great trip and I cannot wait to visit again.

Are you ready for Thanksgiving?  I see a turkey in my future!

I have recently been attending workshops and studying artists trying to bring better color relationships to my work.  Last week I enjoyed a quick workshop with Elio Camacho, who is a master with color.  His work led me to Sergei Bonhart.

Mr Bongart is a famous Russian artist.  One of my favorite paintings of his depicted his garden, which he painted in all seasons.  I was inspired by his work on this piece.

Palette Knife Art, "A Thistle Day" by Carol Schiff, 8x10" Oil ,SOLD

Who said weeds are not pretty???  I found these thistles on top of Grandfather Mountain outside of Boone, NC last month.

Purchase here
SOLD

Their delicate color and beautiful form was all it took for me to know I had to paint them.  However, it was 50ish, 30 MPH winds and in a very inconvenient spot, so no painting took place at that time.

Fortunately, I had my trusty traveling companion, my camera, hung around my neck and was able to capture this image.

I think that one of the most wonderful things about being an artist is that it has given me the ability to see beauty in unexpected places.   I am so thankful for that gift.

Daily Painting, "Going Coconuts", Landscape, 6x8, Oil

This is another of my daily paintings from my trip to Sanibel Island in May.

My daughter and I were getting our exercise, taking a little walk before it was too hot one morning, trying to dodge all the people on bicycles without getting hit, when I saw this palm loaded with coconuts.

We live in Florida and see lots of palm trees, but our area is further north and coconut palms are not as common there.  There is a lot going on under those palms, all kinds of fibers hanging, old dried up fronds and other miscellaneous materials and of course, the coconuts.  It almost has an abstract quality.

Enjoy!
