Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Mountain Landscape Painting, 6x8" Oil, "High in the Sky"

If you live in Colorado, you probably don't consider 6,000+ feet as high in the sky.  That is the altitude of Water Rock Knob, North Carolina, which is depicted in this daily painting

I returned from a week touring Colorado.  It is incredibly beautiful and wild.  Where else can you go to see a herd of antelope grazing, or big horn sheep!  The prairie is as gorgeous as the mountains.  I wasn't expecting the beauty of rolling hills, of mother deer with their fawns walking through the waist high grasses.

But this painting is from a kinder, gentler mountain.  What is high in the Blue Ridge is a starting point in the Rockies!  I love both places.  Being a flatlander, I feel blessed to be able to visit these stunning landscapes.

Tropical Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Sunset in the Wetlands", 6x8" Oil Painting

This tropical landscape painting depicts the sinking sun and reflections on one of Florida's many waterways. This particular wetland is located between Florida's intracoastal waterway to the west and the Atlantic on the east, on the barrier island that runs down the east coast of Florida. It's a particularly fascinating place as the two bodies of water are less than 1/2 mile apart.

I am just returned from a month in our North Carolina mountain home.  We usually don't stay that long, so, this time I took all my painting supplies and was determined to paint while there.  I finally accomplished this painting, but let me tell you it was not easy.  I could not find the perfect lighting, the perfect place to work (we just put in all new flooring which would not look good with oil paint splattered all over it).  All in all, I did not feel comfortable and was sooooo happy to return to my studio in Florida.  This is something I will have to get used to as we will be spending much more time in the mountains than in past years.  Studio painters (like me) get so spoiled.....I almost wish I were a plein aire painter who can paint anywhere and under any conditions.

Abstract Landscape Painting, Textured Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 10x10x3" Oil

I found some square 3 inch deep canvases in my studio, and decided to play around with one.

I tried several approaches, but nothing was working for me.  So, I just started playing with paint and my palette knife.  I was envisioning  a sunset over the landscape, choosing colors that "felt" right for me.

You can see how deep the canvas is in this pic.  I actually love these big clunky canvases on shelves rather than walls, and I like the feel of the rough clunky paint.

All in all, it was a fun painting day.

Marsh Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, 8x10x.75" Landscape

I always enjoy marsh paintings and was very excited to find some wonderful marshes with easy access in Fernandina Beach.  I was unable to paint there, but I took lots of photos and started painting them in my studio.

The marshes were a combination of green and gold when I visited in October.  I hope to return in March and catch the bright spring green of new growth.

I would love to see them today,  The winter colors are usually a beautiful mauve.

Marsh Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, 9x12" Landscape, SOLD

I recently spent a few days in Fernandina Beach and stumbled across one of their beautiful marshes.  I have always admired marshes and their beautiful colors which change with the seasons.

SOLD
I like texture in many of my paintings and I always enjoy playing with a palette knife.

I also like to push color.  Elio Camacho is a master of pushing color.....check out his work here.
I was in Fernandina Beach to attend his workshop and I hope I was able to use some of his technique in this painting.  The workshop was fascinating and I have already signed for a follow-up early next spring.

Landscape with Flowers, Cone flower painting, daily painting, small oil painting, 9x12" Oil SOLD

I was going through my reference photo files, looking for inspiration, when I found an image from several years ago.  It's funny how I can be totally unimpressed with an image, and then one day, WOW!  I just have to paint it.

SOLD

I tried to remember everything I learned at my workshop with Elio Camacho a few months ago.   I tried to concentrate on color relations and brushwork.

Another priority.....not overworking the piece.  I felt happy when I finished, usually a good sign

A week later, I am still happy with it....an even better sign!  I hope you like it too.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Autumn Landscape, Daily Art, "Tree on Fire", 8x10x1.5" Oil

Autumn in the mountains is where I want to be.  Last year, I was very lucky to spend two months there.

I was inspired to paint this one from the ever evolving show I saw each day.  It brings back childhood memories of northern Ohio and Michigan.....minus the mountains, of course.

What more could I ask for?  It gets better and better each day.  Of course, in the mountains it seems the color is climbing to the sky.

One evening we spied a herd of Elk in the meadow.  You can hear them bellowing in the woods this time of year. They come down to the meadows to feed at dusk and dawn..  This herd was one make and about 30 females.

As much as I love it there, I was ready to head south to Florida when the weather got cold.  When the trees are stripped bare, and the cold winds are blowing, I enjoy the beautiful beaches. Life is good!

Small Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Deep Purple" 6x8" Oil

Purchase here

I've got a thing for purples, lavenders, blues, blah, blah, blah.

I was in the Land O' Trees, better known as western North Carolina, when I painted this.  In the summertime, I get green overload here.  Green mountains, green grass, green leaves.  You cannot escape green.   Maybe that is why doing a purple and blue landscape appealed to me.  More to come!

Flower Painting, Iris Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" on Canvas Panel

I spent most of the spring in the mountains of North Carolina, surrounded by flowers everywhere.  They must have the perfect environment for flowers, and I loved every minute of it.  This is one of the beautiful iris' I photographed during my stay.

I had a difficult time getting this painting to the finishing point, but turns out, my real struggle was in trying to get a decent photograph of it.  I find that blues and greens tend me merge when photographed, especially blues.  I took many photos of this painting, under different conditions, but I believe many of the subtle color changes were lost.  Note to self:  Don't do blue and green paintings, and don't do very dark paintings.....also impossible (for me) to photograph well.

In any event, thanks for viewing my art today.
