California Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14x1.5" , "Off PCH" by Carol Schiff Studio

My good friend, and excellent photographer, Ted Fuhrer,  has done it again, supplying me with so many inspiring images to paint from.  On of the many places he has lived was the coastal region of California.

Ted, I hope you think I did justice to your work.

I am always in awe of the western coast of our country.  Living on the east coast is great, and I am so blessed to be here. We have gentle surf, warm water, island music.... But to me, the west coast is larger than life.  So rugged, so big, a constant test to exist there. The boulders are larger than houses, the mountain streams are full of rushing rapids. The pioneer spirit is still alive there.  I cannpt wait to visit again.

Blue Ridge Church Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 8x10" Oil Painting

This is one of the many, small, white, churches, found in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  They all have their own charm, and I love driving around in search of them.

The beauty of the red tree, was an added bonus, to my find, but, this is a charming scene, anytime of the year.  It pays to have your cell phone with you!

Have a great day!

Tropical Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Florida Painting, "Conchy Joe's" by Carol Schiff, 16x20" Oil

Everybody loves tropical landscape, especially me!  This painting is from a few years back and depicts a much beloved part of our community.  "Conchy Joe's" was a seafood eatery located on the banks of the intracoastal waterway.

purchase here

The original has sold, but I am pleased to be able to offer a giclee print at the link under the image.

The eatery is still there, but under a new name and for me, much of the charm has been lost.  I am glad I painted this scene, while it was a popular and vibrant location, filled with local memorabilia.

This painting was featured as the Art Works poster art several years ago.

Thank you for viewing my blog today.

Marsh Landscape with herons, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 9x12x.75" Oil SOLD

This little painting on linen, is a study for a 30x40" commission that I am working on.

SOLD

I painted several small studies, until the client was happy with the composition.

I think this has a slightly "romantic"feel about it, quite different than my usual pieces.  I kept the brushwork and the colors softer than my usual works.

When I first started painting, there were so many rules to learn.  I never knew what the finished piece would look like and usually started without a specific feel in mind.  After all these years, I am finally feeling a little control in my work, but, oh so much more to learn!

I know for me, this is the appeal of painting, always trying to challenge myself and escalate my skills.  Very frustrating and also very rewarding and ALWAYS interesting!

Have a great day!

architecture painting, daily painter, house painting, impressionist house painting, landscape painting,

This little cottage is on my morning walking route in North Carolina.  I am also attracted to the patterns of light on this little house, snuggled up to the trees.

The atmosphere is isolated woodlands, but in fact, this is a law office on Main Street in the town of Waynesville, NC.

I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Rural Landscape Painting, Autumn Painting,Daily Painting, Palette Knife Painting, 11x14" Oil

A scene that is found everywhere, in my new state, North Carolina.  Maybe not everywhere, but, everywhere around here in the Asheville area.

We are just getting hints of fall.  A maple will have one red branch, while the rest of the tree is still green.  But I can sense that it WANTS to be red!

This is my first autumn as a resident in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and I am excited!

Hope your day is colorful, too!

Island Marketplace, Large Figurative Painting, 52x26x1.5" Original Painting

I consider myself to be a daily painter.  As a daily painter, most of my work is small, many times just 6x8".

My painting today is a different story at 52" x 26".  Not my largest painting ever...but right up there.

Purchase Here

I enjoy painting large, but it does present other issues.  Framing or no frame?  Such a large piece means a large investment in framing....a frame your client may or may not approve.

Where do I store it?  Not everyone has the luxury of a spacious studio.  I am one of those people.  Since downsizing, I have even less space to store unsold artwork.

The logistics of painting such a large piece, is not to be ignored.  My aging knees protest at the thought of climbing up and down a step stool to paint.

So, this piece may continue to be one of my rare, larger efforts.

This old barn, sits near our home, in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I see it every day and knew I would paint it eventually.

I painted with brush and palette knife, creating texture for interest.  I popped the autumn colors, for the same reason.

I almost always use a black frame, as it really shows off the colors.

One of my favorite flowers to paint, are coneflowers (echinacea).  I think they have so much personality.

This time, I used a palette knife, to add interest and dimension.

I always try to keep a black frame around, as I think they really help the painting to pop!

Fall Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Autumn Trees, 6x8" Oil on Canvas

I posted this last autumn. How did autumn get here so fast?  Time seems to go faster and faster each year.

purchase here

We have just returned from time in the mountains, rushing home to monitor hurricane season in Florida.  When we return to the mountains, this will be a typical scene.

It is so easy to overdue autumn colors.  Your eye tells you the intense colors are what you are seeing, but when you put it on canvas, it is not believable.  Time to tone it down a touch.  Nature is maybe not quite that bright.

I must say, I felt a little envy when I saw this beautiful scene.  Looks like it came straight out of a movie, don't you think?

Marsh Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "North Florida Marsh" by Carol Schiff, SOLD, 8x10x.75" Landscape

I always enjoy marsh paintings and was very excited to find some wonderful marshes with easy access in Fernandina Beach.  I was unable to paint there, but I took lots of photos and started painting them in my studio.

SOLD
The marshes were a combination of green and gold when I visited in October.  I hope to return in March and catch the bright spring green of new growth.

I would love to see them today,  The winter colors are usually a beautiful mauve.

Tropical Landscape Painting | Florida Painting | Daily Painting | Small Oil Painting | Jupiter Island by Carol Schiff | 12x12x1.5" Oil

This post is dedicated to my very good friend and pseudo sister, LaVerne.  She recently passed away and I think of her every day.

Everybody has dreams, and this tropical landscape painting is one of mine.  When I was growing up in Ohio, on the cold, below zero mornings, as I hopped out of bed, I had this image in my mind.

Balmy breezes, palm trees and a beautiful beach!  What more could I ask for?

With the severe winters we have been having, I am sure lots of people have the same dream.  I have to admit...I have never second guessed my decision to move to Florida many, many years ago.  Well, maybe a little in the middle of a hurricane!

I hope you enjoy this tropical landscape painting which is a scene from Jupiter Island, Florida.

Abstract Landscape Painting, Textured Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 10x10x3" Oil SOLD

I found some square 3 inch deep canvases in my studio, and decided to play around with one.

SOLD

I tried several approaches, but nothing was working for me.  So, I just started playing with paint and my palette knife.  I was envisioning  a sunset over the landscape, choosing colors that "felt" right for me.

You can see how deep the canvas is in this pic.  I actually love these big clunky canvases on shelves rather than walls, and I like the feel of the rough clunky paint.

All in all, it was a fun painting day.

Farm Landscape Painting, Farmhouse Decor, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Landscape Painting, 11x14"

I have painted by neighbor's farm, in the Smoky Mountains, many times.

Purchase Here

It is such a scenic view.   I cannot pull my eyes away from it, whenever I pass.  I always think of a chirpy little bird, whenever I see the barn  "face".

This time, there was an added surprise.  This lovely black bull, standing in the field.  I pulled out my trusty camera and was able to get a decent shot.

That was several years ago!  I looked at the image many times over the years, but only tried to paint it recently. The time must be right!

Thanks for viewing my art today.

A Painting Workshop to Remember

Today, I am repeating a post, from a few years ago.  I think it is worthy of your attention, again.  Enjoy!

A few weeks ago, my friends Carmen and Donna and I drove to Fernandina Beach, FL to attend a 4 day workshop with Elio Camacho.   Elio is one of my favorite painters and my very favorite instructor and I have been lucky enough to attend with workshops twice a year for the past three years.

I started each day with this beautiful sunrise over the ocean, while eating breakfast at the hotel.

This is one of Elio's 36x48" demos that he paints in just three hours!

Here Elio met a challenge to paint without darks.  He often states a painting should bring it's own light.  I think this one meets that requirement

Another of his larger than life paintings.

This was a 25 minute demo he did for us on foam core.  He pushed the color even more than usual and got wild and crazy.

His brushwork is very exciting...something I am hoping to bring to my work.

Elio spent a year painting blue studies, then moved on and studied yellows and reds.  He likes to set up still life, to challenge his students, all in a single color.  He believes red is the most difficult color to paint.  If you can do a red painting, you can really see color.  This was a 20 minute demo he did for us.

We hated to leave the workshop after 3.5 intense and fun days.  To console ourselves, we had a final lunch of fried shrimp at our favorite eatery.

A final photo of Carmen and Donna, de-stressing with  ice cream in front of Island Art Association.  We thank the members for hosting us once again.  Then we hop into our car for the drive home.

One last classic Elio demo that he painted in about 15 minutes, out of his head.  I almost cried when he scrapped it off the next morning.

Needless to say, we are excited to return for his next Florida workshop in the spring.  You can find his workshop schedule here.
