Floral Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting "Summer Wildflowers", 6x8" Oil on Panel
One of my guilty pleasures, when I am in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is my morning walk, which inspired this painting.
Of course, I also admire the songbirds and gorgeous, towering, hardwood trees. It's not really a guilty pleasure, as it is hard work walking 4 miles when at least half of it is up the side of a mountain.
purchase here You would have to live a summer or two in Florida, to understand how much I enjoy walking in mid 70's temps in the middle of summer. |

Rose Trellis Oil Painting, Garden Painting, 8x8x1.5" Small Landscape
I have always had a vision of the perfect garden, and it has always included a rose trellis. Alas, it is not to be, for me. But, I can paint one!
Actually, now that I think about it, this is much more my style. No maintenance required!
Have a rosy day!

Barn Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Rustic Painting, Scenic Landscape, 9x12x.75" SOLD
I am spending time in the mountains and have said goodbye to the tropical scenes, for now.
I tried to take a few hints from him.
Be prepared to see a few more barns and rural scenes in the next few weeks.
Have a colorful day!
ADDITION: Since originally writing this post, a lot has happened! On Tuesday the 4th, we woke to the frightening news that Hurricane Matthew was targeting our home in Florida. We hopped in the car and drove 10 hours to protect our home. Wednesday was a stressful day with lots of hard labor in hot and humid weather. If you have never put hurricane shutters on your home, you cannot image the amount of strength it requires to lug these 11 foot panels and attach them over windows and doors. It was an exhausting day and my husband and I crawled to bed, grateful to have our house protected, as long as the roof held. At five the next morning, the news is worse, the storm is now a Cat. 4 and expected to make landfall in our county. Complete devastation is predicted!! I call my daughter and son to inform them that they need to evacuate, which means find a safe hotel now. My daughter goes to Boca Raton and my son and family (and their three dogs) come with us to Orlando. Safe, but now we are expecting all of us to be homeless. Maybe our entire town will be gone!
The night passes and we wake to good news. At the last moment, the storm veered east, just enough to save our town, reports of damage are few and minor. Did our roof hold? Did our house flood? Now we are under curfew and must wait until the curfew is lifted to return home. Finally, at 4:00 that afternoon, we return home to find our house is fine, and so are my son and daughter's home. Nobody can believe that the storm moved, just enough at just the right time, to save us. We still have two days of steaming Florida heat to face without power, but there is always a smile on our faces.
We are still awaiting news of our sister in Hilton Head Island, SC who also had to evacuate. Their entire island, which substained substancial damage, is closed off . It will be several more days of waiting before they are allowed to inspect their home. It will be weeks, maybe months before life returns to normal there.
Later this week, we will return to the mountains of North Carolina. We left half our belongings there and hope to see at least a few days of autumn leaves before returning to Florida for the winter.
Having survived many hurricanes over the years, we were spared one of the worse aspects. We were able to be in constant contact with friends and family through texting. In the past, we sometimes waited days after the storms before having news of their safety. We are so grateful to have survived this horrible storm.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Small Flower Painting, "Country Style" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil on Panel
When I am in Florida, I go to the store, purchase flowers, bring them home and try to arrange them perfectly in a beautiful vase.
When I am in North Carolina, I go to the garden, or just pick some wildflowers, plop them in a small milk bottle or jelly jar.......that's what I call "Country Style".
I tried to keep that laid back feel in the painting too, using both a brush and a palette knife.
Then, I brought it back to Florida, to remind me to relax and chill now and then.
Thanks for reading my blog today. I hope you get to "chill" a little too.

Rustic Barn Landscape Painting, Rural Landscape, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 9x12x.75" Palette Knife Painting, SOLD
Last month, my friends and I went on a photo shoot in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We rode the country roads, looking for scenic farms.
I couldn't resist this old ragged barn, on it's last legs. I painted with a palette knife hoping to bring the scene to life.
It was a hot September day and the grasses had turned a golden brown.
How nice to be an artist. I truly believe we train our eyes to see so much beauty, that often goes unnoticed in daily life. What a blessing we have!
Thanks for reading my blog today.....and stop to smell the roses.

Fall Landscape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Autumn Trees, 6x8" Oil on Canvas
I posted this last autumn. How did autumn get here so fast? Time seems to go faster and faster each year.
purchase here |
We have just returned from time in the mountains, rushing home to monitor hurricane season in Florida. When we return to the mountains, this will be a typical scene.
It is so easy to overdue autumn colors. Your eye tells you the intense colors are what you are seeing, but when you put it on canvas, it is not believable. Time to tone it down a touch. Nature is maybe not quite that bright.

Then I remembered a workshop I took, many years ago from Fritz vanEeden. Fritz is an artist of international acclaim. Among his many talents is his ability to paint images that he pulled from his mind's eye.
I gave it a try!

MY Painting in the Joker Movie!, Small Oil Paintings, Daily Painting, Still Life Painting,
How lucky can I be?
One of my paintings was recently purchased for set design in a new movie! The Warner Brothers movie, was filmed in Harlem, Manhattan and the Bronx., and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. The title is "Joker".
The painting is one I completed in a workshop a few years back.
I am thrilled, and only hope it doesn't end up on the cutting room floor.
The movie was recently released, and I must say, IT WAS A GIANT HIT!!

Mountain Church Painting, Small Oil Painting, Church Landscape Art, Farmhouse Wall Decor, Daily Painting
This is one of the many, small, white, churches, found in the Blue Ridge Mountains. They all have their own charm, and I love driving around in search of them.
The beauty of the red tree, was an added bonus, to my find, but, this is a charming scene, anytime of the year. It pays to have your cell phone with you!

Landscape Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Ocracoke Island, N Carolina
I recently visited the outer banks of North Carolina. Ocracoke is a small settlement on the southern end of the banks.
The residents are a special group of individuals, who fiercely defend their lifestyle.
It is a 2 1/2 hour ferry ride, to reach the island, and many of the residents go years without visiting the mainland.
I appreciated their dedication to this small strip of land, 40 miles from the mainland, and am thankful they were willing to share it with me.

Beach Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Caribbean" by Carol Schiff, 16x20,1.5" Oil SOLD
Have you ever been to the Islands? In Florida "the Islands" can only mean one thing.....any of those gorgeous, laid-back, tropical paradise places starting with the Abaco's Islands to the north and extending down the coast of South American to Granada.
The water color is amazing and I never get tired of gazing at it. The air is hot and sultry, everyone moves in slow motion.......island time. The people are amazing and you feel like you are living in a Ernest Hemingway novel.
Once we spent a week on Eleuthera with our grown childen, and every morning one of our neighbors would leave a fresh pineapple on our porch. Yummy, best Pina Colada ever! We would walk to the bakery every morning for fresh Bahama bread for our breakfast. In the afternoons, the entire island population would gather on the dock to buy fresh fish. The fishermen would lay their catch on the dock and the housewives would gather around to pick their dinner.
Every day we found another isolated, beautiful beach to enjoy. Evenings were spent sitting on the porch, laughing, enjoying each other. It was a throw back to another, simpler life and we all enjoyed it immensely.

Marsh Landscape with herons, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 9x12x.75" Oil SOLD
This little painting on linen, is a study for a 30x40" commission that I am working on.
I painted several small studies, until the client was happy with the composition.
I think this has a slightly "romantic"feel about it, quite different than my usual pieces. I kept the brushwork and the colors softer than my usual works.
When I first started painting, there were so many rules to learn. I never knew what the finished piece would look like and usually started without a specific feel in mind. After all these years, I am finally feeling a little control in my work, but, oh so much more to learn!
I know for me, this is the appeal of painting, always trying to challenge myself and escalate my skills. Very frustrating and also very rewarding and ALWAYS interesting!
Have a great day!

Barn Landscape Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Textured Painting, 9x12" Oil Painting
Barn Landscape Painting.
When my Pieces of 8 art buddies were visiting me, in my mountain condo, we left our paints at home. We still had plenty to do!
Each day we would venture out, with our cameras in hand. One day we drove through the countryside, looking for rustic barns.
We found plenty to choose from.
On this painting, I used a combination of brushwork and knifework. I concentrated on color relationships and texture.
I so enjoy fall in the mountains and wanted to share some of the sights of the season.
Thanks for viewing my blog today!
